How does your garden grow?

Welcome to gardening season 2010!

Over the past few weeks, we have put up the fencing, done the tilling, and planted nearly everything. We're holding out on cucumbers, potatoes, and tomatoes, but the rest is good to go.

Here is Cayden, helping to plant his current favorite vegetable...beets.

He wanted to harvest them later that afternoon. :)

Dad worked hard on the fence, which must thwart both jumpers (deer) and diggers (groundhogs). He is confident that this year's double-layer solution is going to do the job. We also have, for the first time, a garden gate.

This is a serious improvement over past years (we design the fencing to be dismantled at the end of the season, so until now there was nothing permanent in place), and I'm thrilled.

We're starting to see a few early seedlings poking up, too. Witness...

Sunflowers

Zucchini

Onions

Peas

The first thing we'll be harvesting, however, is the black raspberry patch. It isn't producing yet, but it's almost time!!

And to kick off the excitement of the season, our neighbor gave us some fresh asparagus from her garden this past weekend. OMG we're eating local (VERY local!) produce already! Hooray!!

I'd be cleaning my canning jars already, if we weren't still working our way through last year's harvest. Guess I could just buy more... ;)
